| For some time now, Silent Sounds have
been looking at various ways that we can increase our support for
the deaf community, and also to help cut costs for our customers in
the Public sector. On-line BSL interpreting is something that we are
very excited about, and that we believe is an inevitable development,
considering the technological advances over the last few years, particularly
with regards to high speed broadband, and also the public sectors
desire to cut costs.
On-line BSL interpreting is not and never will be a replacement
for face to face interpreting, but is something that can be used
to compliment the services that are already being offered. We believe
that it will soon become a vital resource both for GP’s and
for use in Hospitals. Its’ primary purpose will be to deal
with initial enquiries and basic appointments. In-depth consultations
wherever possible, should still be dealt with face to face, by a
qualified BSL interpreter.
Leading deaf charity Sign Health is pioneering the technology behind
the new service through their specially formed subsidiary, Sign
Translate. To access the service, all that is needed is a reasonable
quality webcam, and a pc/laptop with an average specification, together
with a high speed broadband line, and telephone handset.
We believe that this innovative service will provide the deaf patients
with much needed immediate access to a sign language interpreter,
and will help the organisations using the service to make significant
savings.
Richard Durrant of Silent Sounds says “Although we are a
commercial organisation, we have a genuine desire and passion to
help people. For over 10 years now, Silent Sounds have been one
of the country’s leading deaf communication services.
We have a dedicated team of Language Service Professionals, all
trained and experienced in their profession, and we take a real
pride in our ability to understand the needs of the deaf community
and provide the best service possible. Partnering SignTranslate
is a fantastic new opportunity, and being one of SignTranslate’s
On-Line Sign Language Interpreting providers is very exciting indeed.”
